Inspired by northern hawk owl, these 2 owls are hand carved and polished on a single black gray granite to mimic the natural owl feather color. The crescent moon is shaped from white granite with slight gray pattern running through to look like light clouds. The larger owl protecting the little one shows the loving relationship between them. 

In many old cultures, including China, Japan, Aztecs, and Maya, owl is frequently spoken of as the bird which calls for the soul. This may be that people thought they heard the voice of a spirit when they may have heard only the indistinct hooting of an owl in distance. In the modern West, owl is a symbol of wisdom, which links back to the goddess of wisdom in ancient Greece.
